Long experience in ART
Swemed started in 1981 and was one of the first companies in the world in the field of ART. A ground breaking innovation by Swemed was the first application of the transvaginal ultrasound technique in gynaecology and IVF treatments. The use of follicle aspiration needles together with an ultrasound probe has since 1983 been successfully used by almost all IVF clinics worldwide. 

This innovation was the outcome of a close collaboration between Swemed and Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. 

Vitrolife, then called Scandinavian IVF Science, started in 1993 and was the first company to set a new standard in ART – Pharmaceutical Quality. Since then we have continued to develop and produce products with the highest quality. The GIII-series™ from Vitrolife was the first media series specifically developed to resemble the female reproductive tract. 

Vitrolife acquired Swemed in 2006 and is now one of the largest companies in the field of Assisted Reproduction.
